{"id":4464,"date":"2018-11-13T17:55:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T16:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fondazionemorra.org\/evento\/independent-film-show-18th-edition\/"},"modified":"2021-03-05T15:41:13","modified_gmt":"2021-03-05T14:41:13","slug":"independent-film-show-18th-edition","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/www.fondazionemorra.org\/en\/evento\/independent-film-show-18th-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"INDEPENDENT FILM SHOW 18th Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>June 21st, 2018<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Vigna San Martino<\/strong><br \/>\nCorso Vittorio Emanuele 340, Napoli<\/p>\n<p><strong>June 22nd and 23rd, 2018<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Belvedere Museo Nitsch<\/strong><br \/>\nVico Lungo Pontecorvo 29\/d, Napoli<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fondazionemorra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/INDEPENDENT-FILM-SHOW-18th-Edition-PROGRAMMA-2018.pdf\">INDEPENDENT-FILM-SHOW-18th-Edition-PROGRAM-2018<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">Independent Film Show 18<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">th<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\"><strong>\u00a0edition<\/strong>, an international show dedicated to experimental film, coordinated by<strong> Raffaella Morra<\/strong>, organised by <strong>E-M ARTS associazione culturale<\/strong>, increases the sensorial experiences of its guests who for three days can participate at 16mm films screening (many are Italian premiere), at a concert by<strong> Bernhard Schreiner<\/strong>, and the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">expanded cinema<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0performances by <strong>Jeanne Liotta<\/strong>, <strong>Canecapovolto<\/strong>, <strong>Bea Haut<\/strong>, and <strong>Helga Fanderl<\/strong> starting June Thursday 21<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">st\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">at the Vigna San Martino, Friday 22<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">nd<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0and Saturday 23<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">rd<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a02018 at the Museo Nitsch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en\">From June 22<\/span><span lang=\"en\">nd<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0to July 6<\/span><span lang=\"en\">th<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0Jeanne Liotta\u2019s video-installation\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">In This Immense Space Hidden Things Appear Before Us<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0and works on paper are shown at Museo Nitsch\u2019s roof room (in collaboration with Microscope Gallery New York).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en\">On 21<\/span><span lang=\"en\">st<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0June, summer solstice offers the chance to perform the first program at the precious Vigna San Martino and grants a selected audience to participate, only on invitation, to long projection night and live expanded cinema performances until sunrise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Jeanne Liotta intersects art, science and natural philosophy in a comprehensive\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">science project<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">, following Ralph Waldo Emerson\u2019s theories: projected and modified by the artist,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">Affect Theory<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0(2013), composed of two films in planetary and satellite position, and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">Path of Totality<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">, realized after the total solar eclipse of August 2017, transport us within a celestial alignment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Shaped on a philosophical confraternity model in Catania on 1992, Canecapovolto experiments with the \u201ccognitive dissonance\u201d, circuit bending and radio drama, collages on paper&#8230; its identity and its message is found among the grey areas between hearing and vision: the HD video\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">Nembutal<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0(2015) is prelude to\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">NAGNAGNAG<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0performance which uses the circuit bending, or the modification of musical circuits, children toys, etc. and the short-circuit as expressive procedure to suggest chaos! Music and noise suddenly become categories with unstable boundaries. It is a point of no return. Circuit bending is to Music as Found footage is to Cinema.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en\">Free your perceptions<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0curated by Raffaella Morra, is a mind journey or a deep study of the film apparatus and their possible representations produced by interaction with the observer, who participates in an adventure of perception free from preconceptions and classifications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en\">These ten films and videos explore knowledge\u2019s boundaries: Christin Turner\u2019s HD video\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Vesuvius at Home<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2017) reveals a symbiosis between cinema, memory and the spiral of time, and Bernhard Schreiner\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Victory to Loss Ratio<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2013-14) tries to get images and sounds synchronized in our mind; in\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Heat Shimmer<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(1978) Arthur and Corinne Cantrill transform the landscape of central Australia into varying degrees of shimmers; in\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Sphinx on the Seine<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2009) Paul Clipson meditates on a series of brief and enigmatic images from around the world. In\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">My Moon Her World<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(1995) Vicky Smith combines animation with live action treated &#8211; pixellated, refilmed, in slow motion, and in\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">R\u00e9miniscences<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2001-2020) by Olivier Fouchard the pictures shot at Auvergne during the spring 2001 take on the appearance of dreaming things with unreal colors and the addition of found footage; Anja Dornieden &amp; Juan David Gonz\u00e1lez Monroy\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Comfort Stations<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2018) is a psychological test found by chance and without known authors; Christopher Becks and Emmanuel Lefrant\u2019s film\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">I don\u2019t think I can see an island<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2016) is a symbolically authentic non-Euclidean adventure;\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Take-Off<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2006) is a collaborative project originated from the work-in-progress between Katherine Liberovskaya and the composer Al Margolis who activate a relation between images, sounds and editing processes; Semiconductor\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Heliocentric<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2009) uses time-lapse photography and astronomical tracking to plot the sun\u2019s trajectory through a series of landscapes. It is usually almost impossible to visualize how the earth moves around the sun, even though we know it is true, instead we &#8216;see&#8217; the sun moving around us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en\">Bea Haut is an artist and film-maker in an expanded form, multimedia and often reactive to the environment, her works allude to perception of\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">inter-related\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">moments, spaces and actions in-between. On Friday, June 22<\/span><span lang=\"en\">nd<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0for the program\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Matters of Being<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0Bea Haut selects eleven films by UK film-makers who try to penetrate the enigmatic film materiality, evoking an interactive zone between\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">object and subject in which arises an entanglement of aliveness, existence and event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en\">William Raban\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Cripps at Acme<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(1981) is a documentation of a performance by\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">Steve Cripps, a wildly misbehaved, and perhaps genuinely unhinged artist of that time.<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0John Smith\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">The Hut<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(1973) is an experiment with visual rhythms which animates\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">still photographs of a decaying building<\/span><span lang=\"en\">.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">Through rhythmic intercutting<\/span><span lang=\"en\">, Tanya Syed\u2019s film\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Chameleon<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(1990) moves silently towards a point of confrontation with the outside world, shockingly emphasized by the film\u2019s only sound. Inger-Lise Hansen\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Talking to a Stone<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(1993) creates a fragile and illusionistic balance between the forces of creation and destruction in time. Bill Leslie\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">9 Objects<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2016) is part of a project with a deceptively simple title, \u2018what happens to sculpture when it is filmed and photographed?\u2019 which explores in practice the potential relationships between sculptural objects and different representational media. Two films by Laura Hindmarsh:\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Self Registration<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2015) is the act of self-alignment using hand contact printing and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Finding Focus<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2016) shot at Lake George in Australia to give solutions to the myths which surround the lake\u2019s sudden fluctuation in volume. In\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Button Box Blast<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2016) Mary Stark films an explosion of a box of buttons in a random pattern of optical lights and sounds. Jenny Baines\u2019s two films, both double 16mm projection, document two short performances:\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Untitled (Insertional)\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">(2014) 2 bolex, a rope, two artists and a tree, and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Untitled (# 1 25\/25 x 10\/4)<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2016) run around to a tree repeatedly\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">whilst tied to it<\/span><span lang=\"en\">. Vicky Smith\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Small Things Moving in Unison<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2018) confronts the purely plastic problems that persist in the manually made film<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">, of registering marks in the same place over a series of frame<\/span><span lang=\"en\">s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en\">To deepen the dynamics of film creation, in the program\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Mattering and Uttering<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0Bea Haut reveals her film work by selecting ten b\/w films: working with 16mm film in a materialistic and do-it-yourself way allows\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">a responsivity to concur<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">between the artist and her materials<\/span><span lang=\"en\">.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">This becomes an entanglement of thinking, being and doing, activating an agency in both the self and the material.<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0The program starts with\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">Pending<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0(2016), a\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">100ft length of film\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en\">(30.48-meter) is formed by the audience into a \u2018live loop\u2019 before being\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">taken up and played out by the projector<\/span><span lang=\"en\">, thus creating an empathy between spectators and artist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">On Saturday June 23<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">rd<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0the beautiful sunset from the Belvedere Museo Nitsch is the ideal set for the concert\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">The magnetism of knowing and not knowing<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0by Bernhard Schreiner: a performance in which the sound structures are developed live on the basis of \u2018instant composition\u2019 (call it improvisation if you wish), using a concert zither, effect- and loop-pedals, software (for\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">live-input-processing<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">) and a lot of small parts to interfere with the strings of the zither (mallets, brushes, metal springs,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">slide, bow, etc<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c<span lang=\"en-GB\"><em>&#8230;Once a satisfying self-mixing structure is developed, it might be left alone for some time (or not), possibly allowing myself to step back and listen to the evolving self-mixing transformations. I might get back to further interfere with the setup, overdub, etc. or even restart the concert from zero (or not).<\/em>\u201d (Bernhard Schreiner)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en\">Helga Fanderl continues to innovate Super 8mm film techniques and since the mid-80s has realized over six hundred films, each lasting about three minutes, and edited in-camera. Her films arise from intense observation and honed improvisatory approach that depends on rapid reactions and split-second timing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"en\">Constellations<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0is a temporary montage of twenty-four films (1992-2016)\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">exemplifying<\/span><span lang=\"en\">\u00a0some aspects of Helga Fanderl\u2019s poetic that evoke correspondences and contrasts, thus experiencing an intense form of microcosm and in the silent flow of the frames we may float in a limbo of mental associations without time and space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c<em><span lang=\"en\">&#8230;<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">Handling the projector, changing one or more reels, focusing and framing the images, introducing my programs and talking about my filmmaking &#8211; all this creates a live event and a unique performance corresponding to the poetics of my filmmaking<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en\">\u201d.
